Adelaide

Adelaide.
When I see you on an empty street
all the bells ring out.
Which one of us has the most to lose?
You know I’d pick you out in any crowd.
Won’t you put my hands back on the wheel?
If you kiss me once, I’ll know you’re real.
Adelaide.
You were smiling like a child
in the Black Horse Hotel.
And through the looking glass I fell,
and then the ending we know very well.
But I always knew you felt the same,
I would come back to life if you’d call my name.
Adelaide.

The Usual Things
04:12
|

The Usual Things.
If you had come around to find me in
hoping to equalise, for me to blink.
You couldn't criticise or ever understand me,
when open and terrified of the uncertainty.
Now, I'm reckoning on an endless lucky streak,
to save my ship from breaking up at sea.
On those jagged islands, rocks and coral rings, the usual things.
And you wanted everything.
Now you want to give it all away,
Give it all back to me.
I knew these back roads well enough, we used to haunt them.
Swam at the bend in the river once a day, we never talked there.
Just went about the usual things in our usual way,
a beautiful, beautiful hour with nothing to say.
Now, she’s beckoning from the endless dusty street
And all I have is emptied at her feet,
All those diamonds, gems, stone necklaces and rings, the usual things.
And you wanted everything.
Now you want to give it all away
Give it all back to me.
Reading your letters, taking no calls.
I have always got something to do with my time,
even when that’s nothing at all.
And you wanted everything.
Now you want to give it all away,
Give it all back to me.
And you want to hold back the sea,
Now you want to drink it all in.
Underneath the waves, underneath the skin
of the usual things.

Tied to You
03:02
|
|||
Ray, you always walk beside me
and I can only stay,
keep the corner of my eye on you.
But there’s something in the way.
A dirty moon crawls over you.
Takes flight as I break symmetry,
but all along I think I knew.
I’m tied to you,
tied to you.
Can’t tell who’s dragging who.
Ray, a broken past behind you.
you stumble on your name.
If I look I never find you,
so I pretend that it’s a game.
Break the door down, drown the key.
Take flight as I break symmetry,
and all along I think I knew.
I’m tied to you,
tied to you.
Can’t tell who’s dragging who.

Nobody Else
02:57
|
|||
Nobody Else.
Ain’t it a shame that they don’t want you today?
You’re hiding away but you share in the blame game.
Let summer breathe on us,
after they take you to the wall.
You can’t help a sprain
from dishing out pain, pain, pain,
still you dance to the tune.
Under the guns and over the wire,
burn out the blackberry snakes with a fire.
Memory takes what the heart has set free,
there’s no other place for a desert like me.
Because nobody else will do.
Nobody else,
nobody else will do.
Is it a drain when they don’t see you that way?
And it never rains,
so we turn to the same lame clichés.
And all of the rules,
every young fool wants to know.
Let out again.
Sneaking the same late ride
led our plans to ruin.
Over the lands of economy,
there’s no other place that I’d rather be.
Cover your tracks and blow your cocoon
They’ve got all their hooks into rumours of you.
‘Cause nobody else will do
Nobody else will do.
Nobody else will do, do, do, do.
Nobody else, nobody else will do.

Dead End Road
04:47
|
|||
Dead End Road.
I went down a dead end road
Never took what I was owed.
I saw through you undisguised
drew my power from your eyes.
I hoped things could be the same,
then I heard you’d changed your name.
The doomsday birds ate all the seed,
on that crooked trail you blazed,
with a curse you placed on me.
Your my ship and I’m your rock.
Left them tangled at the docks.
No relief to feel afraid.
I know just one thing,
that we’ll go there anyway.
I went down that road alone
and burned everything I owned.
I needed you to set me free.
Let the sacred dawn
make a new morning for me.
We live on in state of fright.
It’s just too late to say good night.
Shot through like a holy ghost.
Left a note for them that said it.
Now we’re heading for the coast.

Spirit Animal
04:01
|
|||
Spirit Animal.
She locks it in her heart.
The sunny side arrives on time,
she’s open minded and complicated.
They’re dancing in the hall.
We cut outside, see out the night,
and watch the light as it comes and goes.
It comes and goes again.
She’s your spirit,
she’s your spirit animal.
God it’s good to see you.
In the golden light of the common vibe
at harvest’s rest and eventide.
She fought a different battle,
but halfway through she lays them low
and holds them tight and we’re not
going anywhere tonight.
She’s your spirit,
she’s your spirit animal.
Twenty miles from Guernica,
the market town is cast alight.
They’re taking bets that we’ll never make it.
They strafed us in our cars.
We got down low no place to go
or way to hide, but I’ve got to see her
on the other side
She’s your spirit,
she’s your spirit animal.
She’s your spirit,
she’s your spirit animal.

Something Wonderful is About to Happen.
Chase the rainbow
but you’re falling far behind
the brambles in your creek don’t lie.
There’s a taste like your seven silver wishes.
Do the dishes only some dreams die.
But all the time you’re waiting for a breakthrough,
now it’s just the bus that takes you home.
Something wonderful’s about to happen.
Something wonderful yeah.
In the photos there’s something in your eye
not tall enough to reach the sky.
And then the rain comes,
Mr. Maybe leaves a message,
hello that really means goodbye.
Something wonderful’s about to happen.
Something wonderful yeah.

Waters Still
04:16
|
|||
Waters Still.
When the waters still
You can drink your fill
When the waters still
You can do what you will
Behind those nervous daffodils
there’s a thousand ways to will.
Open your head that’s what she said,
cause you never did fell satisfied until
you make the waters still
and when you did
you could see things.
Take the shadow’s apart
to make a hole in the dark
take a violin to break the water’s skin
and leave the mind sick past behind
give no answers, remain in light.
Make no plans about what will be.
Take your time unwind the twentieth century.
Until the waters still
and you are one with the sea things.
Time to put the wheels in motion,
too much sky and too much ocean.
You got your own battle of wills
time to bring back all those nervous daffodils.
And leave the mind sick past behind
give no answers, remain in light.
Make no plans about what will be.
Take your time unwind the twentieth century.
Until the waters still
and when you do you can see things
You can see things
You can see things.

Stolen Poetry
07:41
|
|||
Stolen Poetry.
Stolen poetry, slipping through my hands.
A neck of shoreline in the trees.
A darkened house, our long-neglected plans.
When daylight savings comes around
to the sideshows at the old footy ground,
we’ll leave them waiting.
We’ll roam the golden Earth,
ride it for all it’s worth; right until the end.
Kissing under bridges,
kissing under bridges,
kissing your hair.
The evening slowly changes,
the evening slowly changes.
She said, you are the way,
the truth in the night, and that poem’s a knife
and it sinks into the flesh.
You know, we used to read that stuff aloud
to each other, under autumn blankets,
under summer’s cover –
but that could never save me.
Right around the corner and down the road,
lovers under headlights.
Falling into the tall grass,
waiting for the shame to pass.
When the day is done and
I make my way outside,
to get things wrong and put things right.
The evening slowly changes.
The evening slowly changes.
I used to write such meaningful letters
to everyone that I loved.
From rooftop bars,
to underpasses under tarps.
Behind the dunes and out of the wind.
Though all the din, through thick and thin.
And just before the moon goes out,
she gets up and leaves without a word.
As if she never heard,
as if she never heard.
The day has come and
I make my way outside,
to get things wrong and put things right.
The evening slowly changes.
The evening slowly changes.
Sinking into the Indian Ocean,
that’s just the way she is,
just the way she is.
That’s just the way she is.
